During the Victorian Era, art styles were drastically changed., furthermore, different kinds of artists became well-known. Artists such as Vincent Van Gogh and Edvard Munch started to use their emotions to paint a picture. Some of the other artists of the Victorian Era include Sir David Wikie, Paul Delaroche, and Claude Monet.
Edvard Munch
Edvard Munch, an artist from Norway, was a popular artist in the Victorian Era. One of his most familiar paintings was 'The Scream' -see on subject matter page- which he painted in 1893.
The style that Munch painted was called symbolism. In symbolism artwork, the artist focuses on the interior of objects in a painting. Even though Munch was a Symbolism artist, he was also greatly influenced by Impressionists such as Van Gogh and Claude Monet, when he visited Paris in 1885.

Vincent Van Gogh
Vincent Van Gogh is probably a very familiar artist to many. Van Gogh is a great example of someone who expressed emotion through his paintings; he used bold colors to express his depression. Throughout his life, Van Gogh suffered mental illness, and ended up commiting suicide at age 37.
Van Gogh was a great artist, however he sold only but one painting in his lifetime. Today his paintings would go for tens of millions of dollars; some over $100 million.

Sir David Wilkie
Sir David Wilkie was said to be the most important working artist of the early nineteenth century in Britain.
During the time of the Victorian Era, art styles began to change. Wilkie was one of the artists that picked up this change. Wilkie was visiting Spain around 1828, when he was inspired by the Spanish artwork. He started to develop a bolder style where he used strong color choice. An example of one of Wilkie's paintings is the painting on the left- a self portrait.
In 1840, Wilkie began to paint religious paintings. To study more about religious art, Wilkie traveled to a country somewhere overseas. Sadly, when he was traveling back, Wilkie passed away at sea.

Delaroche started his career when he began taking lessons from a French artist named Antoine-Jean Gros, who was known for painting life-size historical events. It's no question where Delaroche got his inspiration. Delaroche began painting historical events and soon was very well-known for them. Most of Monet's artworks were painted at the end of the Victorian Era. Some of his most famous paintings include: Haystacks at Giverny, Japanese Footbridge, and Rouen Cathedral. Water Lilies, one of Monet's most well-known pieces, was not painted until 1903, two years after the Victorian Era ended.
